Research & Strategic Communications

These projects represent efforts to gain a deeper understanding of a userbase or audience in order to develop more targeted, effective, and meaningful communications.

Website Usability Study

I was a member of a team tasked with evaluating the usability of Oregon Health Science and University’s Spanish and Russian microsites. My two collaborators and I developed the moderator scripts, incidental communications with proxy users, and note-taking forms for the test. We also consolidated research findings into a presentation. My primary contributions were: recruiting a pool of proxy users; coordinating the moderators and proxy users for a remote testing session; gathering, organizing, and analyzing a selection of the data; and delivering data visualizations to my collaborator, who designed the slide deck.

Training & Development Programming

Planning a full day of programming that will meet the needs of over 600 employees occupying a wide range of roles is daunting, and indeed, considered impossible. Doing so in the wake of layoffs made the task even more difficult. Nevertheless, this situation posed an intriguing application for a research project to develop audience awareness. I used surveys, interviews, and a network analysis based on Actor Network Theory to identify the key interests of participants and whether or not those interests were served by the planning committee. Overall, it was evident that the planning group did not fully represent employee groups, nor was it constituted by representatives from the pertinent functional areas. The documents presented illustrate the data analysis I completed along with project management materials derived from the analysis.

Grant Writing

This document represents a portion of an application for a competitive federal grant. It details the strengths, weakness, and significant problems of the applicant’s academic programs. My task here was to strike the right balance between 1) emphasizing the institution’s problems and thus demonstrating need, and 2) demonstrating that the institution had a foundation upon which to build additional capacity.

Genre Analysis: Health Communication

I examined health communication messaging to better equip myself with the knowledge and skills to develop similar messaging in other professional contexts. By considering the elements of a public health messaging site, I was able to see how to frame content that might appeal to a reticent, individualistically-oriented audience.

I used ChatGPT 4o to reformat the transcripts of the videos analyzed, suggest references, and provide high level feedback on a completed draft.

Heart Disease Risk Database Analysis

I collaborated with two peers to examine correlations between demographic profiles, symptoms, and diagnostic criteria for heart disease using Python scripts. The project client was a fictitious task force seeking guidance about high risk profiles so it could develop public health interventions. In addition to contributing analysis and serving as the project manager, I designed the presentation.
